How to Help Unconscious People Safely: Recovery Position & Tips

Published on April 23rd, 2025

Learn essential tips for helping unconscious individuals safely, including the recovery position, airway management, spinal precautions, and when to call emergency services.

### Tips for Assisting Unconscious Persons

- **Use the Recovery Position:** Roll unconscious individuals into the lateral recumbent position to allow fluid drainage and keep the airway open.
- **Check ABCs Regularly:** Always assess Airway, Breathing, and Circulation, and contact emergency services if condition worsens.
- **Positioning:** For non-traumatic cases, always roll onto the left side to maximize oxygen (the left lung has one lobe bigger). Keep the left arm straight up, right arm next to it, and roll away from you to reduce vomit risk.
- **Spinal Precautions:** Do *not* move individuals with potential spinal injuries, especially after falls from height or blows to the head, without proper immobilization. Use C-Spine precautions and call EMS immediately.
- **Safety and Simplicity:** When alone, call emergency services first, then stabilize the person. If multiple helpers are present, log roll carefully to maintain spinal alignment.
- **Vomiting Management:** Position helps prevent choking on vomit, and airway checks should include using jaw-thrust/lift techniques rather than chin lifts.
- **CPR Awareness:** If trained, perform CPR with a 30:2 ratio at about 100 compressions per minute. If unsure about CPR, focus on compressions to improve survival chances.
- **Avoid Unnecessary Movements:** Only move or change position if safe, and avoid twisting or contorting the body unnecessarily.
- **Additional Precautions:** Use items like a backpack with a basketball to prevent someone from rolling onto their back if they are heavily intoxicated.
- **Stay Safe & Informed:** Maintain awareness that proper emergency response can save lives, and always prioritize calling EMS when in doubt.
